At midday today Hawke’s Bay District Health Board established an Emergency Operations Centre and assembled its Incident Management Team in response to the swine flu alert.
Hawke’s Bay people returning from North America or Mexico within the last fortnight who have influenza like symptoms are being asked to ring their GP or nearest medical centre for advice.
Director of Public Health, Dr Mark Jacobs announced tonight that results from some of the Rangitoto College party who tested positive to Influenza A on Sunday, have also tested positive for Swine Flu H1N1.
The Ministry of Health is continuing to monitor updates from the World Health Organisation concerning an outbreak of swine influenza (H1N1) in Mexico and the western United States.
While three people in the North Island have tested positive for Swine Flu H1N1, so far none of the people from Southland or Otago who were on the affected flight NZ1 have any symptoms.
A further press conference will be scheduled when the results of tests on the Northcote students are known. Until then, communications will be distributed via this medium.
The Ministry of Health wants to stress that all passengers who have returned from North America and Mexico in the last two weeks who have flu-like symptoms should contact their GP or other heath professional. This key message is not limited to passengers who travelled on Air New Zealand flights NZ1 or NZ5.
Anyone suffering flu-like symptoms who has travelled from Mexico, and other parts of Central or North America over the past two weeks, should stay at home and phone their doctor for medical advice immediately.
There are still no known cases of swine flu in the Bay of Plenty or Lakes district and while the initial nine people quarantined will be returning to normal life today (Friday), a further five people have been quarantined and given Tamiflu as a precaution.
Hawke’s Bay District Health Board is continuing to identify and screen people who are unwell and who have returned from, or been in contact with people who have retuned from, Mexico or North America in the last seven days.
