Waikato Hospital is a Level 6 regional referral and trauma centre for the Midlands Region in New Zealand . It serves a catchment population of 800,000. All tertiary services except paediatric intensive care are on available site. The Emergency Department has approximately 53 000 presentations per year, with an overall admission rate of 40%. There is a heavy trauma caseload (30%). Children compromise 20% of all attendances. The Emergency Department runs a trauma retrieval service for the Waikato District Health Board Region and the neighbouring Taupo Hospital .

There is an academic and research emphasis and an active teaching program. Individuals on the specialist team have a colourful and varied professional portfolio, such as being instructors for APLS, ACLS and EMST, Medical Director of EMS, toxicology, research, quality and risk, patient flow, travel medicine , aviation medicine, and disaster management The Emergency Department is accredited for the full 2 year advanced training with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine. We are also accredited for the Paediatric component.

The applicant must be an enthusiastic team player and must be eligible for or working toward vocational registration in New Zealand. Applicants with FACEM or FACEP or other equivalent qualification are welcome.
